A very dark image in many more ways than one - the B & W of the photograph; the solid black of the finger nails and the beads; and the rather dark theme of the work; the act of 'mourning.'
What I find particularly interesting is that the ritual presented to us in this image is both specific and familiar, yet the work speaks to something broader. The elements just mentioned denote more than the mood of the image, but also a specific cultural/social way of mourning. In particular the association of death with the colour black (the Chinese often associate it with white) and the clutching of what appears to be rosary beads. What is being shown to us is a particular kind of mourning, but what is being conveyed, nonetheless, is the feeling of mourning as a universal rite.
